Show Me Your Words (8129134772)

Urdu, Hindi, Hinglish, English...multilingualism complicates and enriches Bollywood filmmaking, as does the linguistic interplay between generations in a time of rapid societal change. 'What language is mine and just how 'mine' is it?' is but one of the questions posed in Show Me Your Words. In this book, Connie Haham tours the rich sociolinguistic landscape in evidence both in the making of Hindi movies and in the movies themselves. Sounds, words and lines come to us via the human voice in this audio-visual medium and provide a power and poetry essential to the well-crafted scene. Featuring insightful conversations with noted film personalities such as Javed Akhtar, Shabhana Azmi, Jaideep Sahni, Piyush Mishra, Nagesh Kukunoor, Elahe Hiptoola, Kader Khan, Javed Siddiqi, Shridhar Raghavan and many more, this book analyses attitudes towards language and language change through the prism of Hindi cinema. A New World Order (0691123977)

Global governance is here--but not where most people think. This book presents the far-reaching argument that not only should we have a new world order but that we already do. Anne-Marie Slaughter asks us to completely rethink how we view the political world. It's not a collection of nation states that communicate through presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers, and the United Nations. Nor is it a clique of NGOs. It is governance through a complex global web of "government networks." Slaughter provides the most compelling and authoritative description to date of a world in which government officials--police investigators, financial regulators, even judges and legislators--exchange information and coordinate activity across national borders to tackle crime, terrorism, and the routine daily grind of international interactions. National and international judges and regulators can also work closely together to enforce international agreements more effectively than ever before.
These networks, which can range from a group of constitutional judges exchanging opinions across borders to more established organizations such as the G8 or the International Association of Insurance Supervisors, make things happen--and they frequently make good things happen. But they are underappreciated and, worse, underused to address the challenges facing the world today. The modern political world, then, consists of states whose component parts are fast becoming as important as their central leadership. Slaughter not only describes these networks but also sets forth a blueprint for how they can better the world. Despite questions of democratic accountability, this new world order is not one in which some "world government" enforces global dictates. The governments we already have at home are our best hope for tackling the problems we face abroad, in a networked world order.

A Guide to Organizational Strategies for Thinking and Writing offers teachers and students ten patterns for arranging ideas that will expand their repertoire of organizational skills. Each pattern is illustrated by passages that model the strategy, and each is accompanied by an assignment that invites application and practice. Models that encompass a wide range of subjects-literature, history, science, mathematics-are provided for students in the early grades, in middle school, and in high school or college. The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX : The Belgian and Dutch squadrons (9791096490745)

The Spitfire Mk.IX is one of the best known versions of the Spitfire. However, it should never really have existed. Its creation can be attributed to the appearance of the Focke-Wulf Fw190 over western Europe at the end of 1941. Royal Air Force pilots were quick to state the Spitfire Mk.V, the frontline RAF fighter at the time in Great Britain, was outclassed in many aspects by the new German fighter. The RAF, therefore, had to urgently find a solution to improve the Spitfire and with a new Merlin engine, the Spitfire Mk IX was born. The Mk.IX was produced for almost three years and would become one of the main fighters and fighter-bombers of the RAF in Europe in 1944 and 1945. In total, during the Second World War more than 100 fighter units were totally or partially equipped with the Spitfire, included the two Belgian fighter squadrons of the RAF, Nos. 349 and 350 and the only Dutch fighter squadron, No. 322. These three squadrons are here covered in 36 pages, close to 40 photos and ...
